White Fronted Amazon

White-fronted Amazons (Amazona albifrons)  are also known as the White-fronted Parrot, or Spectacled Amazon Parrot is a Central American species of parrot. This species is named for the bright white patch of feathers on its forehead, although the amount of white varies on each bird. White-fronted Amazons have predominantly green plumage with some blue on their outer wings. They have bright red around their eyes that can look like spectacles or glasses, and blue feathers behind the patch of white on their foreheads. It’s the only amazon species in which adult males and females easily can be distinguished by external appearance: Males have bright red feathers on their “shoulders” (alula), while females have green “shoulders”. Juveniles have pale grey irises and less red on their face and the white area is replaced with a smaller yellowish area.

Temperament: White-fronted parrots have assertive personalities yet like to bond with a single person. Best to socialize them thoroughly at a young age, or they become reclusive as they get older. They thrive on social interaction and they need it to remain healthy and happy. If they do not have proper socialization time they may become depressed.

Care: They are a good choice for owners that have plenty of spare time to spend with their new bird. These parrots need daily exercise to stay healthy and maintain the desired weight. A minimum of 3 to 4 hours outside of its cage per day should provide the correct time to enable proper exercise routines to be maintained.

Most experts recommend a cage at least 2 feet x 3 feet and with a height of 2 1/2 to 5 feet. The cage should have ample play equipment inside, including climbing apparatus, as these are acrobatic birds.
